EARTHQUAKE INFORMATION PLANNING FOR AN EARTHQUAKE - Set-up a system of friends that you will contact and who will contact you after an earthquake to make sure everyone is alive and well.
- Find secure locations in and around your house.
- Keep your door/gate keys either in or near the door to expedite your exit.
- Inspect objects in high places to be sure they are secure.
- Have the following items easily accessible:
- Radio
- Flashlight with fresh batteries
- First-aid supplies and medicine that you routinely take
- Blankets
- Non-perishable food
- Bottled water (keep a fresh supply)
- Make sure your family knows what to do in the event of an earthquake (both at home and away from home) and have occasional drills. Decide where the family will meet in case the family is separated at the time of an earthquake.
DURING AN EARTHQUAKE - Remain calm.
- Execute your plan.
- If inside:
- Open the door of exit.
- Crouch in a fetal position next to a sturdy piece of furniture.
- Stay away from windows or objects that may fall.
- If outside:
- Move to an open area.
- Remain clear of buildings, walls, trees, electrical wires, etc.
- If in a car:
- Stop the car at the side of the road, away from bridges, electrical wires and tall buildings. Crouch in a fetal position next to the car.
AFTER A MAJOR EARTHQUAKE - Look for injured or trapped persons.
- Do not move injured persons unless they are in immediate danger.
- Inspect water and electrical lines. If damaged, disconnect service.
- Do not use your vehicle except in an emergency.
- Prepare for after-shocks. Extra precaution should be exercised since buildings may be in a weakened condition.
- Do not use the telephone except for emergencies.
- Listen to a local radio station for further instructions.
- Check with your system of friends to ensure that they are well.
