If you want some country maps of Costa Rica, you can get free ones downtown at the Costa Rica Center for Tourism. It's under the cultural plaza located next to el Teatro Nacional. You can get free country maps, and maps of various cities in Costa Rica (San José, Heredia, Puerto Viejo). They will also give you a bus schedule, which will help you get public transportation into the outlying parts of Costa Rica. There are hundreds of fliers in there as well.

 You may have to ask specifically for the country maps and bus schedules, but they usually have a stack in there.
