 | Flashcards aren't really a revolutionary, cutting-edge idea, but they remain one of the best ways to really boost your vocabulary. And incidentally, one of the best ways to do it isn't to associate the Spanish word with the English word, but with the image or idea of what the word represents. |
Graziella spent a LOT of time creating flash cards that are now famous among the students - partly because of her quizes, but mostly because nearly everyone has benefited from using them to learn new verbs. She's selected images for well over 300 commonly-used Spanish verbs. |

Go to the Insert menu and select Symbol, highlight the symbol that you want to program, such as Á (capital A with accent). Then select the Shortcut Key and "press new shortcut key". The "current keys" will tell you what the current shortcut is to that key. Since I use very few shortcuts on my keyboard, I have assigned ALT + n to give me ñ and ATL + o to give me ó (accented o) etc. You will still need the above codes because this programming only works in Word, of course, you can always create your documents in Word and then cut and paste them into e-mail and other types of documents. Suppress the Red and Green Underline in Word If you are using MS Word and the wavy underlines check spelling (red underline) and check grammar ( green underline) clutter your document, while you are typing in Spanish, you can temporarily hide them as follows: - On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Spelling & Grammar tab.
- Select the Hide spelling errors in this document and Hide grammatical errors in this document check boxes.

 | As mentioned in a previous article, flashcards are a great way to learn new vocabulary. Graziella has put together a great selection of over 300 frequently used verbs. I've posted these verbs in a format that you can use to test yourself on your computer, or by syncing them with your iPod. |
From below or from the Vocabulary Downloads page, first download a batch of "iVerbos". Unzip the file somewhere on your computer, and if you want to test yourself on the verbs using the computer, just open one of the photos and then put the computer into slideshow mode (in Windows XP, by pressing "F11). Click the Pause button, and then you can control the pace of the slideshow. To use the flashcards on your iPod, simply unzip the file somewhere on your computer. When you plug in your iPod, click the iPod device in iTunes, and then click the Photos tab. You can then select a folder to sync with. Either select the folder with your iVerbos, or place the iVerbos folder in a place where it will sync with your iPod. Here are the iVerbos files: |

I had the opportunity to serve in mission for a weekend with a group of students from ILE (Instituto de Lengua Espanola: my language school), a group of students from Mt. Vernon University in Ohio and a group of high school students from Sojourn High School (which is attached to ILE). The most exciting part is that we served at the Methodist Camp in Ciudad Quesada, this is the same camp that my church, Rockville Presbyterian Church in South Carolina, serves their mission week with every year. This camp and this area in Costa Rica are like my home away from home here in Costa Rica. I have been traveling with my church for the last three years to this camp and so getting to go and serve with this new group of people in a place that feels so much like home to me was such an awesome experience. I could write for hours about all the experiences we had, but instead I want to share with you all some amazing pictures of my weekend.
First, a little about what we did. We took a group of 56 people, including a baby up on Friday, October 17th and we returned to San Jose on Monday, October 19th. We served in the community of El Mirador by presenting a two day Bible School for the local children, we helped with the local Methodist Church's feeding program and some people from our group helped do some construction on the new kitchen building for the church and paint the church. We also had a crew that stayed behind at the camp to do some painting and some clearing of a path down to a river. All in all we had a great time and felt very blessed at the end of the weekend. I was so blessed to have been able to see a lot of my friends that I have made over the years in this area and to be able to communicate so much more with them with the new Spanish that I am learning. Having the previous knowledge of the camp and this area I played a pretty big leadership role in this trip and I also helped out with Vacation Bible School. Of course most of my pictures are of the amazing kids that I had the great privilege of working with. |
